Apologia: Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology Review

Over the past few weeks, my 9.5 year old and I have had a blast learning about the body and how God made us so unique.  Our study has been supplemented with a curriculum from Apologia Educational Ministries.  We utilized Apologia's Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology textbook, regular notebooking journal and MP3 Audio Book.

 

 

 

The Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology textbook is designed for grades 3-6.   The textbook is broken into 14 lessons:

• Lesson 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
• Lesson 2: The Skeletal System
• Lesson 3:The Muscular System
• Lesson 4: The Digestive and Renal Systems
• Lesson 5: Health and Nutrition
• Lesson 6: The Respiratory System
• Lesson 7: Life in the Blood
• Lesson 8: The Cardiovascular System
• Lesson 9: The Nervous and Endocrine Systems
• Lesson 10: The Nervous System Extended
• Lesson 11: Your Senses
• Lesson 12: The Integumentary System
• Lesson 13: The Lymphatic and Immune Systems
• Lesson 14: Growth and Development

Along with these lessons are "Try This" sections.  These are science experiments designed to demonstrate each lesson.  For example, while learning about the cell,  Kelly made a cell out of JELL-O. She had a blast doing this project and is eager to learn more about the body, especially if it includes projects as enlightening and fun as this one.  I am also excited that the textbook includes Bible verses to back up the lessons. Super awesome!

 

The textbook alone is $39.  It is a sturdy and glossy textbook, love it!

 

The regular notebooking journal is designed to go with the lessons in the textbook.  It matches the textbook.  It consists of 28 weeks of lesson plans (2 days per week).  Each lesson tells you what lesson and pages in the textbook to read then taking you back to the notebooking journal to complete a page ranging from the diagram of a cell to labeling your bones etc.  My oldest daughter Kelly (9.5), is always eager to work on the next page of the notebook.  It makes me excited to see her so excited to learn. Yay!
 

 



 

 

The notebooking journal consists of:

• Writing down fascinating facts.
• What do you remember?
• Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles.
• Copyworks: Print and Cursive
• More to Explore                                 

All of these pages are sectioned towards each lesson with the textbook.  I think my daughter's favorite thus far is the cell experiment and the person to person model at the front of the notebook.  We printed out a picture of her head and face to glue at the top of a body they provide for the kids to cut out.  Then they get to cut out transparent copies of the skeleton to go over top of the body to really get an understanding of the skeletal system.  She's looking forward to adding the the nervous system and muscular system next.

 

I love how simple yet how involved the notebook is.  The beginning of the journal says:  This Notebook Belongs to:  And of course she writes her name.  It's something we can keep for a very long time.

 

The Apologia notebooking journal costs $24.

Along with our textbook and notebooking journal, we received the MP3 Audio Book.  This contains a complete audio recording of the course Exploring Creation WIth Human Anatomy as read by Jeannie Fulbright.  It works great for auditory learners, slow learners, or have learning disabilities.  Kelly tried the MP3 Audio Book, but discovered she prefers reading the material out of the textbook. I look forward to trying the MP3 Audio Book on my middle daughter when she hits the third grade, as I think this will greatly help her in her learning.  She thrives on anything auditory.
